Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

In the Department of Physics, we take the promotion of diversity and the assurance of equality very seriously. We are committed to providing an inclusive environment that creates equal opportunities for all, and in which everyone is treated fairly.

The Department of Physics is under the umbrella of the School of Physical Sciences, which was proud to be awarded a renewal of its Silver Athena SWAN award in 2022 in recognition of our efforts on the promotion gender equality. The School is now continuing it Athena Swan work which will demonstrate our continuing commitment to making positive changes and tackling challenges to improve equality, diversity and inclusivity in relation to gender and beyond.

The Department of Physics was awarded Juno Practioner status of the IoP flagship gender equality Project Juno in 2022 and is now working towards Champion status. As such, we fully endorse and are working towards incorporating into our policies and frameworks the six Juno principles.

The Department of Physics participates in and works closely with the School of Physical Sciences Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee and has its own EDI Champions group. Both of these involve staff and students working together to improve all aspects of our environment.
